From the first kernel of an idea to contract negotiations to reading a royalty statement, this course will help prepare you for a career in publishing. Topics we’ll discuss include genre vs. literary fiction; point of view, setting, and world building; “rules” of writing; story structure; common mistakes; writing a query letter; which publishing venue is right for you; you’ve been offered a contract, now what? Come armed with questions and the first pages of your work in progress.
Jeanne C. Stein is the national bestselling author of the Urban Fantasy series, The Anna Strong Vampire Chronicles. Her character, Anna Strong, received a RT Reviewers Choice Award for Best Urban Fantasy Protagonist in 2008 and was nominated again for the 2011 book, Crossroads. Anna Strong was named one of Panaromal Fantasy’s Top ten Ass-Kicking Heroines by Barnes and Nobles’s reviewer, Paul Goat Allen in 2013. Jeanne also has numerous short story credits, including the novella, Blood Debt, from the New York Times bestselling anthology, Hexed (2011). Her series has been picked up in three foreign countries and her short stories published in collections here in the US and the UK. The ninth in the Anna Strong series, Blood Bond, debuted in September. Jeanne is active in the writing community, belonging to Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers (where she was honored by winning the Writer of the Year award in 2008 and was nominated again in 2011), Romance Writers of America, Sisters in Crime and Horror Writers of America. She has taught at numerous conferences and on-line academies. Her newest venture, The Fallen Siren Series, is paranormal romance written in collaboration with Samantha Sommersby under the pseudonym S. J. Harper. The first book in that series, Cursed, debuted October 1.

A 2011 winner of the Colorado Gold Contest and a 2012 semifinalist in the Writers of the Future Contest, she has taught workshops and developed curricula for Writer's Digest University. She currently works at Nelson Literary Agency in Denver, Colorado.
